Our Coaching Staff

Coach Dale Hurley has a wealth of coaching experience, having worked at Blair Academy, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Tennessee, and the US Naval Academy. He's been a fixture at Phillips Andover since 2006, taking on various roles as he's led both the boys and girls programs to some impressive New England championship medal finishes.

Dale's coaching expertise is rooted in his own remarkable rowing career. Coach Hurley is a 5-time national team member with 4 consecutive A-final appearances at the world championships. He was in the LM8 in 1990, 1991, and 1994 and won a bronze medal in 91. He represented the US in the LM4 in 1992, and the LM2- in 1995. In addition to his personal success, he has also played a key role in passing on his passion for rowing to the next generation of athletes, helping to nurture their love for the sport and leading them to their own successes.

Andy Finch comes to Wolfeboro Sculling with a wealth of knowledge and passion for rowing spanning over 25 years in the sport. Most recently Finch served as Director of Rowing for Merrimack College and Director of Fall Crew at Phillips Andover. Finch previously coached at Brooks School, Phillips Exeter, and founded the program at St, John’s Prep in Danvers, MA.

As an athlete, Finch was a novice walk-on rower in college. Through dedication and perseverance he earned team MVP his senior year and went on to compete for the United States in three World Championship, won gold at the Pan American Games, and is a five time US National Champion. Finch is thrilled to bring his love for rowing to new and experienced athletes and excited to follow their successes at Wolfeboro Sculling and beyond.

Kaitlin Varga-Wells

Kaitlin Varga-Wells currently works at Brewster Academy where she is the head coach of the crew team, and an English teacher. Mrs. Varga-Wells attended Connecticut college where she excelled as a student-athlete. She was a four-year varsity letter winner and two-year captain of the women’s rowing team. After graduation, she taught English and coached rowing at both the Frederick Gunn School and the Kent School.

Ian Accomando

Ian Accomando joined the Harvard lightweight crew staff as an assistant in September 2012, and has been a staple on the Harvard coaching staff ever since. Accomando has achieved remarkable success while coaching a variety of boats at Harvard, guiding them to multiple prestigious medal finishes at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships (IRAs). Accomando coached Alexander Bonorris ’15 to a fourth-place finish in the lightweight pair at the U23 World Championship (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) in the summer of 2015. It marked the best finish by an American crew ever by two finishing places and 15 seconds. The crew missed a medal by just .05 of a second. Before coming to Harvard, Accomando served as an assistant coach of the junior men at the Pennsylvania Athletic Club in Philadelphia. Accomando is a former captain of the Dartmouth lightweight crew, where he helped the Big Green earn a silver medal at the 2012 IRA National Championship and a bronze at the 2011 event. Accomando earned two second team All-Ivy honors during his four years in Hanover, N.H.
